Becca Cody: Participant Profile

Strength comes from more than simply lifting weights or running marathons. For Becca Cody, strength comes from finding a local community that creates lasting effects in the lives of women through supporting their physical health.

Who or what inspired you to participate in the Mamma Jamma Challenge this year?

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in April of 2019. Prior to my diagnosis, I was not aware that the Texas Mamma Jamma Ride raised funds to support breast cancer patients and survivors right here in Central Texas. After learning about all of the local beneficiaries and personally benefiting from this fundraiser, I knew that I would participate this year and for years to come.

Tell us about your fundraising experience for the Mamma Jamma Challenge? What are your tips for success?

It probably comes as no surprise that when you've been directly affected by cancer, it is incredibly easy to fundraise for organizations that support the cancer community! My advice would be this: It doesn't hurt to ask! With one-in-eight women diagnosed with breast cancer, making a donation to the Texas Mamma Jamma Challenge is a wonderful way to show support for the cancer community. Even a small donation can have a big impact, and 100% of the money raised benefits Central Texans.

What are some of the activities you will be tracking in this year's Mamma Jamma Challenge? What are your favorite ways to move to beat breast cancer?

First and foremost, I will be tracking my cycling activities for the Mamma Jamma Challenge. I do love to run, row, and swim as well, so I may include those activities just for fun!

How have the beneficiaries supported through the Mamma Jamma Challenge helped you or someone you care about personally?

As a member of Team Survivor, I have directly benefited from support provided by the Mamma Jamma Challenge. I have been rowing with Team Survivor at Austin Rowing Club as well as Rō Fitness, an indoor rowing studio. Team Survivor allowed me to resume fitness classes in a safe and supportive environment as well as meet an incredible group of women cancer survivors!

Do you have a favorite Mamma Jamma Challenge beneficiary and why?

My absolute favorite beneficiary is Team Survivor, of course! Team Survivor works with the community to offer an incredible variety of free exercise classes and programs for women of all fitness levels in every stage of cancer treatment and recovery. As someone who benefitted tremendously from exercising through my cancer treatment, Team Survivor helped me maintain and regain my fitness during and after treatment.

What would you say to someone undecided about registering for the Mamma Jamma Challenge?

Although it is unfortunate that we cannot attend the actual ride, this year's virtual format allows anyone to participate! You can ride, run, walk, row, do yoga, lift weights, any sort of movement counts! In addition, there is no registration fee and no fundraising minimum, so there really is nothing holding anyone back from registering for this year's event!
