Tuesday Tip: Hydrate and Fundraise!
With respect to Martha and the Vandellas: Summer's here, and the time is right for... getting acclimated to the heat. When the heat hits this hard and fast, it can seem overwhelming, and much easier to stay in the AC. But you can do this!
There's a few keys to doing this safely and effectively:
Gradual heat acclimation.
You may be in shape to hammer out 10, 20, 30 miles or more, but be patient with short, easy distances, as consistently as possible, to let your body (and your habits) to get used to the heat.
Hydrate, and hit electrolytes!
It's particularly important that you pay close attention to your hydration while you train. What you drink during your ride is just to try to maintain hydration - if you don't start off with good hyrdation, you're already behind. Make drinking enough water a daily habit. And, make sure you get enough electrolytes and sodium. Not only do you lose them through activity and sweating, but the more water you drink, the more those levels are diluted.
Ride with friends
Sometimes, you need to knock out some solo miles, but riding with friends will make training more fun, you'll keep each other accountable, and you'll be able to watch out for each other on the road. There are great groups at local shops for all abilities. Stay tuned - we'll be partnering with some of those shop rides as the summer goes on.
Remember why you're doing this.
This should be fun, and it can be a challenge, but you're also riding and fundraising for an amazing cause. Don't forget that the fundraising minimum is $350 – which is what it costs to fill up the Big Pink Bus with one tank of diesel. The funds you raise keep the Big Pink Bus rolling and bringing life-saving mobile mammography services to underserved and uninsured women throughout Central Texas. So, every time you make the hard decision to saddle-up, know that you're making a real, tangible difference!
