Tuesday Tip: Stay Cool During the Mamma Jamma Ride!
We're thrilled that you've registered for the 2024 Texas Mamma Jamma Ride. Ride Day is fast approaching on Saturday, September 21, and we know that the hot temps are on riders’ minds these days. But don't let your resolve melt! There are things you can do to prepare yourself, and we'll be hard at work, too, making the Mamma Jamma experience cool in every way possible.
When you cross the finish line, you'll get a famous Mamma Jamma ice-cold spa towel soaked in our special blend of essential oils. Each rest stop will be well-stocked with ice, water, hydration product, and pickle juice. SAG teams will cover all four routes and carry water and ice to support every rider on the course. The new start/finish in Murphy Park comes with a giant pavillion where you'll enjoy a yummy lunch from MIXTAPE, a cold beer from Texas Beer Company, and a pink lemonade cocktail from Tito's while listening to live music.
Meanwhile, if you haven't been riding, don't put off getting acclimated! This week, we're looking at a couple of potentially record-setting days, but then (no jinx!), it looks like we'll start getting some relatively cooler days. Here's how you can be ready for a more enjoyable Mamma Jamma Ride:
Start easy. Just get out. Get some leisurely pedaling in, just to be used to the temperatures. Your body will learn to sweat more efficiently, by sweating sooner, sweating more, and losing less electrolytes in sweat. Start easy, and increase gradually. And remember, if you get acclimated to a temperature range, you're going to be even more ready for lower temperatures.
Water and electrolytes! People worry about dehydration, but electrolytes are a critical part of the formula - they're the chemicals that allow your muscles and even your brain and nervous system to operate. You can actually drink so much water that you dilute out too much of your electrolytes. Don't wait for ride day to get in good hydration habits - make it a daily habit, and you'll be ahead of the game (and healthier, overall).
Be smart about where and when you ride, as much as possible. Shade and mornings are your friends.
Don't go it alone. It's one thing to look out the window and imagine that a paved hellscape awaits you. But if you're going to meet up with friends or family, you can inject some fun (and accountability) into it.
It ain't a race, you've got nothing to prove. If you hit ride morning and feel like you're better off riding a shorter distance - do it!
Finally, remember the cause - you're doing this to support the mission of the Big Pink Bus, providing affordable and accessible mammograms to Central Texas women. The training, and even the heat, handled responsibly, are part of the challenge that you're taking on for the cause. You've got this!
Fundraising Count Down
Remember that every adult rider needs to meet the $350 fundraising minimum to ride. Meet or exceed your $350 fundraising minimum and enjoy a first-class cycling experience. Be a Big Wig by raising $1,500 or more, and you’ll receive VIP parking on Ride Day, a relaxing post-ride massage, and your very own exclusive 2024 Big Wig jersey.
