Louisa Slaughter: Rider Profile

Team Survivor is a special and unique team that is composed of people who are sometimes still in treatment, or who are recently through cancer treatment. For rider Louisa Slaughter and other members of this group, there is a special meaning in riding with each other, for each other, for themselves, and for other loved ones. Nothing can compare to the excitement and achievement of ride day for a member of team survivor.

Who or what drives your ride?

I rode and fundraised for the Texas Mamma Jamma Ride this year because I was diagnosed with breast cancer in June of 2018.  I have personally benefited from two of the beneficiaries (the Breast Cancer Resource Center and Team Survivor). I felt so fortunate to have BCRC provide a patient navigator for me and provide me with a support group during my treatment. I am now trying new fitness classes offered free of charge through Team Survivor.  The fitness classes have not only helped me physically but emotionally as well. I want to do what I can to give back so that other women can also receive the help they need as they battle breast cancer.

Do you have any advice on fundraising or participating in the ride for those who are first time riders?

I shared the link for my Mamma Jamma fundraiser on Facebook.  I definitely recommend doing the training rides.  Everyone is very friendly and supportive at the rides.  There were some great ride leaders and sweeps for each of the training rides I did.

How has Mamma Jamma helped you or someone you care about personally?

I benefited directly through the resources provided to me from Breast Cancer Resource Center and Team Survivor.

Are you on a team? If so, tell me a little bit about your experiences riding and fundraising as a team member.

I rode with Team Survivor.  Our team captains were great.  We sat together and enjoyed lunch after the ride. I look forward to riding with Team Survivor again next year.
