Melissa Henao-Robledo: Rider Profile
Community and connection mark some of the greatest experiences we have in our lives. Over these past months of adjusting to new ways of life, Melissa Henao-Robledo found herself sharing her Austin home with friends and family across cities as she took on new activities in preparation for the Mamma Jamma Challenge.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m a 40-something Austin resident who purchased an e-bike last year and I love it! I never thought I would be an outdoor summer enthusiast, but COVID-19 changed all that. My goal is to spread the word of e-bikes and how they are a great resource to get out and ride if you are a beginner or advanced rider. I’m passionate about art, photography, food and laughing. My Texas Mamma Jamma tag line is, “Tackling breast cancer one mile, smile and dollar at a time!”
Who or what inspired you to participate in the Mamma Jamma Challenge this year?
I heard about the Texas Mamma Jamma through the Bicycle Sports Shop group Women’s Rides last year. Laura Neighbors, my team captain for Laura’s Ride Tribe, has such a contagious, supportive and enthusiastic energy that I knew I would love to be a part of her team!
Tell us about your fundraising experience for the Mamma Jamma Challenge? What are your tips for success?
The fundraising has been more fun than I anticipated it would be which is great! I’ve been using Instagram and Facebook to post pictures of my weekend rides where I try and discover a new place to share with folks. My out-of-town friends and family commented that they liked seeing the sites of Austin, therefore I include a location description and, of course, show off my Texas Mamma Jamma jersey. My tip for success is have fun and make a direct ask! When I’ve asked friends and family via text, phone call or e-mail they have donated. Several $5.00 donations can really add up!
What are some of the activities you will be tracking in this year's Mamma Jamma Challenge? What are your favorite ways to move to beat breast cancer?
I’m planning on walking, maybe swimming, stand-up paddle boarding and, of course, riding 40 miles in September. I’m going to ask all my donors to participate and post a picture of their move activity!
How have the beneficiaries supported through the Mamma Jamma Challenge helped you or someone you care about personally?
I was in the room with my sister when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2012. I will never forget the immense fear that came over me when I heard the doctor’s diagnosis. I cannot imagine what was going through my sister’s mind, body and soul when she heard the diagnosis. She lives out of state, but I’m familiar with some of the beneficiaries and am learning about the others.
Do you have a favorite Mamma Jamma Challenge beneficiary and why?
All eight are my favorite because without these fantastic organizations where would we be? Anything I can do to help Wonders & Worries, Team Survivor, Capital of Texas, Sustainable Food Center, Community Action, Inc. of Central Texas, Susan G. Komen Greater Central and East Texas, Breast Cancer Resource Center and the Lone Star Circle of Care, I’m in!
What would you say to someone undecided about registering for the Mamma Jamma Challenge?
Go. For. It! It’s so much fun to feel connected to nature, exercise, fresh air and a wonderful community that is working for a great cause! And please donate to my campaign here.
