Bill Grimm: Rider Profile

Mamma Jamma Ride is proud to highlight the tremendous fundraising efforts of first-time rider and volunteer, Bill and Cat Grimm. Bill’s devotion to his loving wife Cat is at the heart of his fundraising, and why he rides. While Bill is the subject of this Rider Profile, we are fortunate for Cat’s important involvement. We are delighted to share their story with you and are completely inspired by their strength and commitment.

How did you become involved with the Texas Mamma Jamma Ride?

Bill: “Cat met the Mamma Jamma ride folks during her treatment. She used Breast Cancer Resource’s services. I am most touched by the services offered by Wonders and Worries, even though our children didn't require them due to being older during Cat's treatments.”

Cat: “I took a class at the Breast Cancer Resource Center on lymphedema and another on how to do makeup during chemotherapy. Although we didn’t utilize Wonders and Worries, as our kids were older when I was diagnosed, I did share their information with others facing breast cancer.”

What do you wish everyone knew about the Texas Mamma Jamma Ride?

Bill and Cat: “That the cause is very important to the both of us. When we first got the diagnosis, we had people reach out asking how they could help. We didn't realize how much help we would need. Now it's our turn [to give back].”

Bill: “I ride in honor of not only Cat, but for those people who helped us. One of those people being my Mom, who has since passed away. I ride for her spiritual and emotional support.”

What would you say to someone that has considering registering for the 2020 Texas Mamma Jamma Ride?

Bill: “Without question, I'd strongly encourage them to take the leap. It's not about how fast you can ride, or how far, it's about what your ride can do for people you may never meet. It's about celebrating the day with survivor riders and the rest of the community.”

What has fundraising looked like for you, especially during COVID-19?

Bill: “I worked for Spec’s Wines, Spirits & Finer Foods for eleven years in San Marcos. Last year, when decided to ride, I setup my fundraising page through Mamma Jamma and noticed that Spec’s featured a charity of the month. I hoped to combine efforts. Spec’s agreed to fundraise in the San Marcos store. This is their first time doing this, and they ask their customers to donate at checkout. It’s been a great effort. Spec’s was onboard very quickly. Next year, I hope to get a team together!”

What do you want your customers to know about Mamma Jamma?

Bill: “I like telling them about the history of the charity and the significant financial benefits the ride has generated throughout that history. [I want them to know] that the funds are used to benefit local people. That’s important to me!”

What is one piece of advice you would like to give to another caregiver supporting someone with breast cancer?

Bill: “The short answer? Take the help you will be offered. You might be inundated with offers, so it is important to think about the help you may need, and name a specific favor or task that they can do for you. It may sound strange, but organizing a help schedule can be incredibly beneficial. Everything from coordinating meals, after-school rides home for kids, etc. It’s all helpful.”

We could not agree more! We are incredibly grateful for the vitally important programs and services provided by our beneficiaries and are reminded through the experiences of Bill and Cat’s, that when we work together, so much is possible. Thank you, Bill and Cat!
